DESCRIPTION:I will first review how the dynamics of a closed string in the
presence of a stack of parallel D-branes is neatly described\, in a suita
ble range of parameters\, by an eikonal operator that encodes both classic
al gravity effects (deflection angle\, time delay) and stringy corrections
(tidal excitations of the string).\n\nI will then focus on the region of
parameters where the absorption of the closed string becomes the dominant
effect. I will derive a compact and explicit expression for the quantum st
ate of the open string created at tree level on the branes worldvolume. I
will discuss some properties of this state (angular momentum\, longitudina
l and transverse extension) and compare them with the properties of the co
rresponding semiclassical solution that describes the closed-open transiti
 on.
