DESCRIPTION:The mathematical sciences have contributed substantially to ou
 r understanding of the way cancer evolves. Cancer is thought of as a disea
 se of the genome\, so Professor Tavaré's focus will be on mutations in DN
 A and what they tell us about tumour evolution. He will discuss “tumour 
 heterogeneity”\, the DNA sequence variation observed between tumours and
  within them\, and how we might use this to learn about progression\, trea
 tment and relapse. Along the way he will illustrate some of the underlying
  mathematical and statistical tools that have helped in this endeavor. No 
 prior knowledge of cancer biology is required!
