DESCRIPTION:Quasi-isentropic compression may be used to compress water to
the phase region of the solid ice VII. We present results including images
from gas gun experiments which demonstrate this phase change is limited o
nly to certain surfaces\, remaining metastable elsewhere. This metastable
water can be compressed up to a threshold pressure whereupon a more sudden
 \, homogeneous phase change occurs.
