DESCRIPTION:A presentation will be given about the materials science labor
 atory of the ISL. The lab consists of a powder metallurgy facility which i
 ncludes a hot isostatic press\, a laboratory-scale rolling-mill and a 400 
 tonne press. The lab is also equipped with three universal testing machine
 s and four Hopkinson bars (including a tensile one) for the characterisati
 on of materials’ mechanical behaviour. The materials that are studied ar
 e mainly those being considered for applications in ballistics. These appl
 ications include sabots\, shaped charges\, and wear resistant coatings in 
 guns. A project concerning nanomaterials is running at present.
