DESCRIPTION:The development of surface science over recent years has been
characterized by a progressive shift towards the study of more complex sys
tems than have hitherto been tractable. One direction of considerable acad
emic and practical interest is the adsorption of chiral adsorbates onto in
trinsically chiral high-index subtrates. In order to make progress\, howev
er\, we must develop new conceptual tools that render the relationships be
tween different such substrates apparent. In this presentation\, I will ou
tline a new scheme for visualising\, mapping and describing the high-index
surfaces of crystalline materials\, highlighting a number of interesting
novelties including a class of kink-free chiral surfaces\; some density fu
nctional theory results on the stability of certain complex hcp surfaces w
 ill also be presented.
