DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nI will describe research showing that the social de
cisions we make (ranging from judgments of facial expressions to decisions
about how to allocate resources in an economic game) are shaped by a comb
ination of others’ behaviour and the emotions they express. I will argue
that the process underlying this social influence is one of social apprai
sal: our appraisals of the world around us are shaped by the way in which
others appraise it\, and their appraisals are inferred from their emotiona
l expressions. Knowledge of others’ appraisals is especially likely to i
nfluence judgments about ambiguous stimuli and decisions that involve comp
etition between selfish and prosocial norms. Emotions therefore serve an i
mportant interpersonal function by shaping other people’s social decisio
ns. \n\nAntony Manstead has published widely on the topics of emotion\, at
titudes and social identity. He is a former President of the European Asso
ciation of Social Psychology\, and is a Fellow of the British Academy\, th
e Academy of Social Sciences\, the Association for Psychological Science\,
and the British Psychological Society. He received the BPS Presidents' Aw
ard for Distinguished Contributions to Psychological Knowledge in 2004 and
the EASP's Henri Tajfel Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He previously
held academic positions at the universities of Sussex\, Manchester\, Amst
erdam\, and Cambridge. He is currently Professor of Psychology at Cardiff
 University.
