DESCRIPTION:In eukaryotic cells\, membrane-bound organelles allow the comp
artmentation and regulation of a myriad of reactions. For cells to functio
n\, their organelles exchange specific substrates\, intermediates and prod
ucts of these reactions. These inter-organellar exchanges are facilitated
by numerous mechanisms. In plants\, inter-organellar interactions (at the
cell biology and biochemical level) have been reported to occur between al
l organelles. For example\, plastids and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in
teract to produce major lipophilic (nonpolar) compounds. However\, despite
their importance and decades of intensive research\, how plastid-ER inter
actions occur remains largely unknown. I will present my research into pla
stid-ER interactions and their significance for inter-organellar biosynthe
sis and trafficking of nonpolar compounds. I will show how knowledge of th
ese interactions will aid engineering efforts towards addressing an increa
 sing global demand for pharmaceuticals.
