DESCRIPTION:Democratic values are under siege in Eastern Europe a quarter
century after the fall of the Berlin Wall. A series of political\, econom
ic and social tidal waves threaten democratic structures built during the
post-Cold War transition period. The financial and economic crises\, ter
rorism\, Russian aggression in Ukraine\, the flood of refugees and migrant
s from the Middle East and North Africa\, and the consequent politics of f
ear have combined to give rise to new forms of "illiberal democracy" in Hu
ngary and Poland\, and nationalist parties and movements across Europe tha
t oppose liberal democratic values. An American who has lived for many ye
ars in Budapest offers an assessment of these developments\, and a compari
son with current political trends in the US.
