DESCRIPTION:The application of mathematics and science to warfare has take
 n place throughout history. This application came to prominence within the
  UK during World War II\, and was an essential element in the eventual All
 ied victory. During the war it came to be called Military Operation Resear
 ch (OR)\, or later within the MoD as Operational Analysis (OA). The method
 s used are effectively quantitative common sense\, and they have been furt
 her developed and applied in academia\, industry and government. This talk
  will give an overview of OR/OA applied to the Battle of the Atlantic\, th
 e Battle of Britain and a few more recent examples taken from the author
 ’s career within the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). I
 n addition\, it will include a resume of Dstl’s purpose and career oppor
 tunities.\n\n
