DESCRIPTION:Much of the evidence used to inform the development of organ t
ransplantation in the UK comes from analyses of observational data that ma
ke up a centrally maintained registry. After a brief overview of the UK Tr
ansplant Registry\, maintained by NHS Blood and Transplant\, the use of th
is Registry in the development of a new liver allocation scheme will be de
scribed and illustrated. The talk will cover the formulation of an alloca
tion scheme based on transplant benefit\, the need to adjust survival mode
ls that underpin the scheme to account for informative censoring\, and the
relative merits of new allocation arrangements. The use of updated marke
r data on disease severity\, and the development of an index of the qualit
y of a donated liver will also be described.
