DESCRIPTION:The new field of Synthetic Biology is based upon\nthe adoption
of (i) engineering principles of\nabstraction and modularity\, (ii) compu
tational\ntools from Systems Biology and (iii) new genetic\nengineering te
chniques and components - for\nthe rational design and assembly of new\nbi
ological systems. It is a practical subject\,\nconcerned with the construc
tion of new living\nartifacts. The new interdisciplinary field is being\np
ropelled by the need for improved plant and\nmicrobial feedstocks\, bioene
rgy sources\, and\nnew catalysts for bioprocessing. Synthetic\nBiology is
seeing a rising tide of new scientific\nactivities\, research funding and
 commercial\ninvestment.
