DESCRIPTION:Categorification is a word striking fear into the heart of man
 y a mathematician. Perhaps this is because it seems to involve replacing l
 ots of familiar things (like sets and vector spaces) with more abstract-lo
 oking categories. In this talk I'll try to describe what categorification 
 is\, using several examples from algebra and geometry. If I have enough ti
 me I'll explain how this comes up in my own research into characters of ti
 lting modules.
