did Homo reach Europe? - Dr. Christophe Falguères\, CNRS - Muséum natio

DESCRIPTION:Today\, few prehistoric sites in Europe document the Early Ple
istocene period ranging from 2.0 to 0.8 Ma. With the exception of Dmanisi
in Georgia\, for which Ar/Ar dates suggest that hominids reached the Cauca
sus area 1.8 Ma ago from Africa\, most of these sites are extremely diffic
ult to date because of the absence of “associated” volcanic layers. Ho
wever\, other dating methods can be used and compared with results obtaine
d by other methods such as biochronology and magnetostratigraphy\, in orde
r to provide a chronological framework for this period. This is the case f
or occidental European sites for which a multi-disciplinary approach sugge
sts that Western Europe was first inhabited from 1.3 Ma to 0.7 Ma.
