DESCRIPTION:Escherichia coli populations have evolved to survive under var
 ious environmental conditions. In ideal conditions E. coli populations gro
 w rapidly by expressing one set of genes\, whereas under stressful conditi
 ons another set of genes is expressed conferring stress resistance and cau
 sing\, among other things\, a reduction in growth rate. I will present pre
 liminary evidence that a subpopulation of E. coli enters a stress resistan
 t state at the cost of growth rate despite favourable environmental condit
 ions\, constituting a bet-hedging strategy.
