DESCRIPTION:Even before Florence Nightingale saved lives with pie charts\,
data has been used to inform life-changing decisions. Yet data cannot pro
ve helpful if the data’s implications are not understood. The speakers w
ill present two bodies of research in this seminar to inform\nhow data in
life science fields is shared with others to maximise understanding. \n\nT
he first involves a quantitative study and synthesis of over 300 studies\,
resulting in standards that can be followed when reporting data. These st
andards were shown to improve people’s understanding of given data by up
to 436%. The second study relates to building the capacity \nof data user
 s. The Data-Informed Decision-Making Ecosystem\, which is used at one of t
he largest school districts in the US. This will be summarised as a set of
best practices for those in the life sciences to share their data with ot
 hers.
