DESCRIPTION:"Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) is corrosion-resistant
". Whilst this statement is true in the electrochemical sense\, carbon fib
re-epoxy composites are permeable to aqueous solutions\, which can cause m
atrix swelling and softening. What might the effect of these processes be
on the durability of such materials when used to prestress concrete in agg
ressive marine environments?\n\nThis talk will review work in progress whe
re experiments have been conducted to observe aqueous solution uptake and
swelling in CFRP prestressing tendons. A model to predict how solution upt
ake may propagate through such tendons at locations where cracks develop i
n the concrete cover will also be presented.\n
