DESCRIPTION:Computational science is very much a third pillar of science a
longside pure theory and experimental science. The challenges in physics\,
chemistry\, biology\, and materials research that scientists are tackling
in order to help address some of the most interesting technological (and
societal) problems of today are often of such complexity that it is imposs
ible to make progress without a computational approach. I will focus on my
principal area of expertise in theory and simulation of materials at the
nanoscale using quantum mechanical simulations. I will largely avoid the u
nderlying philosophical difficulties with quantum theory and rather highli
ght the development and practical application of quantum mechanics for und
 erstanding the behaviour of materials.
