DESCRIPTION:This paper examines British antislavery policy in the Indian O
 cean in the second half of the nineteenth century\, focusing on the lives 
 of enslaved Africans who were liberated by the Royal Navy.  The paper high
 lights contradictions of the anti-slave trade campaign in the Western Indi
 an Ocean resulting from demands for political stability and the region’s
  economic dependence on slave labour.
