DESCRIPTION:To construct and operate a new reactor in the UK\, an operator
must apply for and receive a site license. Prior to this\, it is usual fo
r the reactor design to undergo the UK Generic Design Assessment (GDA) pro
cedure\, which is site independent. This has helped enable the standardiza
tion of the designs prior to the site specific stage and has the objective
of helping to avoid unanticipated delays during the construction phase. A
n overview of the GDA process is presented along with the status of the re
levant new build designs within this process. The applicability of the lic
ensing procedure to novel reactor designs is discussed.
