SUMMARY:Fusion Power - within our grasp? - Professor Steve Cowley\, CCFE

DESCRIPTION:With fossil fuel reserves diminishing and concerns over climat
e change increasing\, the hunt for alternative sources of energy is crucia
 l. At CCFE\, research is being carried out into a new source of energy –
nuclear fusion. Fusion of hydrogen nuclei is the process that powers the
Sun\, and at CCFE in the European JET project\, these processes are being
replicated by heating Deuterium and Tritium to 200 million degrees C and e
mploying powerful magnetic fields. JET leads the worldwide effort towards
commercial fusion power and preparations for the next step international f
usion device ITER. The first power stations should be starting up in the n
 ext 30 years.
