DESCRIPTION:Origami is the art of folding essentially two dimensional mate
rials like paper into three dimensional objects. It has recently gained po
pularity amongst scientists and engineers as the technique can be used to
create shape-changing structures. In the talk\, I shall briefly outline th
e method for modelling origami and then focus on the creation of novel ori
gami mechanisms. A number of examples will be given including a foldable s
hopping bag\, a deployable grid structure and origami of thick panels. The
se origami structures have wide engineering applications ranging from depl
oyable aerospace structures to civilian shelters and military installation
 s.
