DESCRIPTION:Although Africa accounts for 24% of the global burden of disea
se\, the majority of related\nbiomedical research still happens in Western
countries. The scientific independence of Africa\nwould mean that scienti
sts across the continent are able to set their own research\nagenda and de
velop their own solutions. TReND in Africa aims to support scientific\ncap
acity development by providing researchers with training\, expertise and e
quipment\nrequired for undertaking research. They are a group of scientist
volunteers spread all around\nthe world. Between them they run training c
ourses which attract scientists\nfrom all across Africa\, ship over equipm
ent to help universities set up new labs\, and send\nover science voluntee
rs for working placements at African Universities. The speakers\nwill disc
