DESCRIPTION:The CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technology is a very powerful t
ool that is being used\nextensively in labs around the world. This adapted
immunity system from bacteria works in a\nsimple way to cleave DNA. In it
 s original\, wild-type format\, CRISPR/Cas9 can create double\nstranded br
eaks in DNA but the nuclease enzyme can also selectively cleave a single D
NA\nstrand or bind to a specific region of interest. The most common use o
f this technology is to\nreduce the level of a target protein by introduci
ng a stop codon in the mRNA. However\,\nfurther uses in modifying epigenet
ic features of DNA and introducing or deleting DNA\nsequences\, have also
been explored. Controversially\, CRISPR/Cas9 has been used to modify\nthe
genome of human tripronuclear zygotes and debates regarding the ethics of
this are\nongoing. In this masterclass\, the speakers will give an overvie
w of the CRISPR/Cas9\ntechnology\, including its many uses and their exper
 iences of this system.\n
