DESCRIPTION:I'll discuss recent joint work with Michael Eichmair. We show 
 that there do not exist unbounded area-minimizing surfaces in asymptotical
 ly flat three manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature (besides flat R
 ^3). I will also discuss some applications of this result to other geometr
 ic questions.
