DESCRIPTION:Number systems are a cultural tool for understanding the world
\; therefore\nnumeracy is as crucial in education as literacy. Numbers hav
e two kinds of\nmeaning: an analytical meaning\, defined by the logic of t
he number system\,\nand a representational meaning\, which involves relati
ng numbers to quantities\nand relations in the world. In general terms\, t
he analytical meaning of numbers\ncan be thought of as arithmetic and the
representational meaning is the basis of\nquantitative reasoning. There is
some degree of independence between\nchildren’s understanding of arithm
etic and quantitative reasoning\, but both are\nnecessary when one uses nu
mbers to understand the world. The heuristic value\nof this analysis will
be illustrated in this talk by considering the development\nof children’
 s mathematical knowledge.
