DESCRIPTION:One of the great mysteries about strongly correlated materials
is that their transport properties seem to be universal. For instance\, a
linear resistivity is ubiquitious to many materials whose microscopic phy
sics and scattering mechanisms can vary immensely. In this talk I will dis
cuss how universality can arise in the diffusion constants of holographic
theories. In particular I will show that in many holographic theories diff
usion is universally related to the so-called `butterfly effect'. This wor
k suggests a potential new connection between transport at strong coupling
and the field of quantum chaos.
