DESCRIPTION:The seminar will explore how Italy’s fascist regime exploite
d the deaths of thousands who fell in the Great War. Whereas\, initially\,
soldiers who died fighting were buried in makeshift cemeteries close to t
he battlefields\, in the 1920-30s\, their remains were disinterred and reb
uried within large ossuaries. Located along the former front in north-east
ern Italy\, the vast scale and monumentality of the Fascist ossuaries mean
s that they are quite unlike other comparable European memorials. By impos
ing a narrative that spoke of victory\, they helped to silence discordant
memories of the Great War as pointless slaughter\, and to bolster support
for nationalism\, militarism and imperialism. \n
