DESCRIPTION:Part of the Public Policy SRI\n\nDirector Sean McAllister will
host a screening and Q&A at Magdalene College\, Cripps Auditorium on Thur
sday\, February 11th at 5pm. The film has been shortlisted for an Outstand
ing Debut award at this years BAFTAs which will take place on Sunday\, Feb
ruary 14th. \n\nFilmed over 5 years\, A Syrian Love Story charts an incred
ible odyssey to political freedom in the West. For Raghda and Amer\, it is
a journey of hope\, dreams and despair: for the revolution\, their homela
nd and each other.\n\n***A £4 admission donation (or more if you wish!) o
n the evening is welcome. Proceeds will go to a Syrian medical relief char
ity - The White Helmets Syria. https://www.whitehelmets.org/ ***\n\nAmer\,
45\, met Raghda\, 40\, in a Syrian prison cell 15 years ago. He first saw
her bloodied face after a beating when she was placed in a neighboring ce
ll. Over months they communicated through a tiny hole they’d secretly ma
de in the wall. They fell in love and when released got married and starte
d a family together.\n\nThis film tells the poignant story of their family
torn apart by the tyrannical Assad dictatorship. Filming began in Syria i
n 2009\, prior to wave of revolutions and changes in the Arab world – at
the time\, Raghda was a political prisoner and Amer was caring for their
young children alone. We filmed in the thriving heart of the Yarmouk Camp
in Damascus – now an infamous news story as its inhabitants are being st
arved to death by the Assad regime. At 4 and 14\, Bob and Kaka have alread
y spent their whole lives watching either their father or mother go to pri
son for their political beliefs. Quiet\, considerate and mature\, Kaka tel
ls me how he is prepared to follow his mother and father to prison for the
  price of freedom.
