DESCRIPTION:The idea that demons could harass\, inflict illness on or inte
rnally possess human beings has been prominent among the ancient peoples o
f the Mediterranean and Near East from at least the fourth millennium BCE.
Yet the conception of these creatures has varied dramatically\, with Meso
 potamian\, Egyptian\, Greek\, Semitic\, and early Christian cultures embod
ying both distinct traditions and considerable elements of cultural syncre
tism. This seminar will explore the myriad strands of thought and practice
from which medieval theologians and clerics wove the fabric of medieval w
 estern demonology.
