DESCRIPTION:I present recent work aimed at extracting high-precision calcu
 lations of nucleon matrix elements\, such as that of the axial-vector char
 ge\, from lattice QCD.   In particular\, I emphasize the need to remove th
 e contribution of excited nucleon states to the matrix elements\, and comp
 are and contrast a variety of means to accomplish that: the use of the var
 iational method\, calculations at a range of nucleon source-sink separatio
 ns\, and the use of distillation.  I conclude with prospects for future wo
 rk on matrix elements\, and in particular calculations at the physics ligh
 t-quark masses.
