 sity of Cambridge

DESCRIPTION:Many microorganisms swim\, their motion biased by environmenta
 l stimuli (e.g. chemical gradients\, light or fluid flow). As a result\, f
luids containing these tiny microswimmers behave peculiarly compared to pa
ssive colloidal suspensions. I will introduce the exciting new biophysics
of these active fluids\, drawing from my research on swimming bacteria and
algae\, currently inspired by problems in microbial ecology and biotechno
 logy.\n\nAll welcome. Refreshments provided.
