DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on two projects that are collaborations b
etween HXD\, MIP and the NEXT groups. They illustrate David’s rare capab
ilities to work both in a “traditional” design role\, as well as engag
e on a deeply technical level\, both in software and hardware.\n \nIn the
first project\, with the Chira team in MIP\, David has been working to hel
p develop refined experiences to test the boundaries of the technology - a
highly accurate\, real-time hand tracker. He has built and explored a num
ber of novel interactions\, bridging the gap between the interests of HCI
and Machine Intelligence through a grasp of both. Through his work he is h
elping define a roadmap to ensure that the tracker remains the state-of-ar
 t in the field.\n \nThe second project\, Disruptive Displays\, is a collab
oration with the Sensors & Devices team in NEXT. The project questions and
subverts general assumptions around the properties of displays\, reimagin
ing them as malleable material that can be cut and shaped\, rather than de
vices that are fragile and unyielding. This project’s ambition is to cre
ate displays that can be shaped into freeform surfaces\, scaled seamlessly
\, and integrated within the built environment\, affording multiple new av
enues for design and a new platform of technology\, tools and interaction
for Microsoft. David will demonstrate early prototypes from this project\,
and describe their potential path to manufacture. \n\n
