DESCRIPTION:Recent seismic observations indicate the presence of a low vel
ocity layer above the mantle transition zone. Marked by a reduction of she
ar wave speed\, the top of this layer is generally detected around a depth
of 350 km. In this talk\, I will present an analysis of seismic data quan
tifying the amount of melt present in this region\, stability of this part
ially molten layer over geologic time\, and the possible origin of the lay
er in the context of crystallization of the Earth&#39\;s mantle from a mag
 ma ocean.
