DESCRIPTION:Widely used in mathematical biology\, reaction-diffusion\nequa
tions\, and in particular the Fisher-KPP equation\, are used to model the\
nspreading of a population through a new environment. The earliest result
s\nshowed that populations moved at a constant speed (i.e. linear in time)
.\nHowever\, about five years ago\, Hamel and Roques discovered accelerati
on\, or\nsuper-linear in time propagation of the population\, when the ini
tial\npopulation is very spread out. Over the last few years\, accelerati
on has\nbeen discovered in a number of other settings. In this talk\, I w
ill\ndiscuss several of these settings\, with the aim of developing an int
uition\nfor what causes and what blocks acceleration. The work in this ta
lk is\njoint with Emeric Bouin and Lenya Ryzhik.
