DESCRIPTION:Building on earlier work of Mustata\, we present a constructio
n in noncommutative nonnoetherian algebra that should be understood as a p
ositive characteristic analogue of the b-function. Recall that the b-fun
ction or Bernstein-Sato polynomial is a polynomial in one variable attach
ed to an analytic function f. It is a fundamental object in D-module the
ory and is well-known to be related to the singularities of f. We will st
art by briefly recalling the complex theory. \n
