DESCRIPTION:In economic or political research\, population well-being is c
ommonly assessed using a single item for life satisfaction or happiness. H
owever\, this approach has many limitations for use in effective policymak
ing\, which have appeared in various attempts to understand the impact of
the recent economic crisis. Using data from the well-being module of the 2
006 and 2012 rounds of the European Social Survey\, well-being was tested
in 21 countries. The existing framework used for this allows for testing i
ndividual dimensions of well-being as well as looking at a more comprehens
ive level. This approach resulted in clear patterns within and between nat
ional outcomes as well as for specific demographic groups. Descriptive app
roaches also highlight specific areas of improvement and concern. While it
may have been assumed that the recession experienced in the past decade h
ad a directly negative impact on the prevalence of those flourishing\, the
se results support similar findings that the actual impact is far more nua
 nced.
