DESCRIPTION:This seminar raises the issue of reliability and considers it 
 in the light of present attitudes in society. Materials from the first Cam
 bridge Assessment Conference will be shown and discussed. We will also ref
 er to studies of examiners’ marking\, and ask if and how it would be pos
 sible to be more frank about the inevitable error in all measurements\, pa
 rticularly in those as complex as general educational assessments. How cou
 ld we ‘educate the public’ more\, so that they have a better understan
 ding of key issues in assessment?
