DESCRIPTION:It was during his time as a Consultant Surgeon in the Glasgow
Royal Infirmary in the 1980's that Professor Sir Harry Burns became increa
singly aware of the complex inter-relationships between social and economi
c status and illness. In 1994\, he became Director of Public Health for Gr
eater Glasgow Health Board\, further developing his knowledge of\, and wor
k in\, this area. From 2005 – 2014\, he worked as Chief Medical Officer
for Scotland. From 2014\, he has worked at the University of Strathclyde\,
Glasgow\, as Professor of Global Public Health\, continuing his research
into the social determinants of health\, working locally\, nationally and
internationally. In this presentation\, Sir Harry will explore some of the
‘myths’ of Scotland’s health inequalities\, and look instead to a p
ositive\, assets-based approach on what can be done to help societies crea
te wellness.\n\nChaired by professor Nigel Unwin.
