DESCRIPTION:In a previous modelling work\, we showed that the response of
Antarctic sea surface temperature and sea ice cover to an abrupt (ozone-dr
iven) wind perturbation has two phases: a fast inter-annual (~1-5y) adjust
ment in which the surface ocean cools and sea ice cover increases\, follow
ed by a slower decadal trend leading to a warming of the surface ocean and
a reduction of sea ice cover. After briefly summarizing these results\, I
will present recent efforts to 1) clarify the link between the abrupt ozo
ne experiments and the climate response to a realistic ozone depletion and
recovery\, 2) estimate the two timescale response in models of the CMIP5
suite and 3) use observational constraints to reduce the large uncertainti
 es on the two timescales.
