DESCRIPTION:Dr Ken Okwae Fening of the University of Ghana Soil and Irriga
tion Research Centre is working with Dr John Carr of the Department of Pla
nt Sciences of the University of Cambridge in exploring the “Role of aph
ids in the transmission of a suspected viral disease and the disease’s i
mpact on the growth and yield of cabbage in Ghana”. Dr Fening has been f
unded by a fellowship form CAPREX and a research grant the Alborada Trust
through Cambridge in Africa.\n\nDr Fening in his research observed symptom
s of a disease threat to cabbage in Ghana which appears to have the charac
teristics of an insect-transmitted viral disease. The project aims to test
the hypothesis that the causative agent of this disease is a virus. The s
tudy seeks to identify the causative agent and its most important potentia
l insect vectors (aphids or whiteflies) and to assess the impact of the di
sease by initiating field experiments in Ghana.\n\nDr Fening will report o
n the molecular identification of the potential vector insects and on prog
ress towards identification of the putative viral pathogen. The outputs of
the project will provide the basis of diagnostic tests and allow for the
formulation of sustainable disease management or eradication methods.
