DESCRIPTION:In the last few years solar photovoltaics have grown at a very
fast pace\, now representing a significant contribution to the overall el
ectricity generation mix in several countries. Although most of the instal
led panels are still silicon-based\, alternative technologies have become
commercially competitive and show promise for the near future. In this tal
k I'll focus on dye-sensitised and perovskite solar cells\, which recently
reached 20% power conversion efficiency\, highlighting current limits and
interesting scientific and engineering issues. In particular\, I'll give
some examples on how electron microscopy can be used to tackle some of the
 se issues.
