DESCRIPTION:The aim of my work is to understand how eyes and visual system
 s have adapted to the biological and ecological needs of animals. Given th
 e energy and space limitations of visual systems\, how do animals with dif
 ferent ecology compromise between spatial\, spectral and temporal resoluti
 on and absolute sensitivity? One of the research topics I have been follow
 ing for a number of years is the observation that many animals are colour-
 blind in dim light. I have studied the absolute colour vision limits in a 
 variety of animals including bees\, moths and horses\, and most recently b
 irds\, frogs and toads.
