DESCRIPTION:Plants face the same challenges as animals when it comes to fi
nding a suitable mate\, but with the added difficulty of being rooted to t
he spot. The flowering plants have recruited animals as vectors to transpo
rt their male gametes to potential mates. This relationship between plant
and pollinating animal relies on a complex system of reward and advertisem
ent. Our research focuses on the petal epidermis as the primary origin of
signals and the primary point of contact. I will present recent work on th
e nanoscale and microscale properties of the petal surface\, describing an
integrated approach \nthat combines developmental genetic\, evolutionary
 and pollinator behavioural perspectives.
