DESCRIPTION:This presentation will analyze the complexities in elementary
mathematics teaching\nthat arise from having ambitious learning goals for
students. Expecting students not\nonly to acquire knowledge but to be able
to understand why what they know makes\nmathematical sense\, and also exp
ecting them to be able to use what they know to\nsolve problems means that
the “content” of lessons cannot be described in a topicby-\ntopic fra
mework. Expecting students to learn what mathematics is by doing it\nmeans
that the teacher needs to not only elicit student thinking but orchestrat
e\nstudents’ exchanges with one another and manage both errors and disag
reements.\nExpecting all students to understand and use knowledge and to d
o mathematics\nwith one another means that the teacher needs to treat all
students as mathematical\nsense-makers even as they are struggling to figu
re things out. We will consider\nwhat this looks like in the classroom\, a
s well as routines and practices that can\nsupport this kind of teaching.\
