DESCRIPTION:The very recent passage of ESSA marks the end of an era in Ame
rican education policies.\n\nFederal laws and incentives to create common
academic standards\, to unify assessments\, to hold teachers accountable f
or students' test results - all this is now over\, with authority in all t
hese domains returned to the 50 states. Should we mourn the passing of the
"federalist decade" of educational reform? Should we agonize over what wi
ll come next?\n\n*Bio\n\nDr. David Steiner* is currently Executive Directo
r of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy\, and Professor of E
ducation at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to his current position\, Dr.
Steiner served as Commissioner of Education for the State of New York (whe
re he led the successful effort to bring $700 million of Race to the Top f
unds to the state)\; Director of Education at the National Endowment for t
he Arts\; and Dean of the School of Education at Hunter College of the Cit
y University of New York\, (where he achieved national recognition for pio
neering clinically-rich residency programs for teacher training). \n\nDr.
Steiner is the author and editor of multiple books and over 60 articles\,
and has addressed and consulted for governments and academic institutions
on both sides of the Atlantic. He earned a BA in PPE from Balliol College
