DESCRIPTION:The selectivity of Watson-Crick base pairing makes DNA the ide
 al tool for controlling structure and functionality at the nano and micro-
 scale.\nFirst\, I will give a brief review of basic ideas and recent advan
 ces in the booming field of DNA nanotechnology. \nI will then explain how 
 short synthetic DNA tethers can be used as artificial ligand/receptors to 
 drive the self-assembly of colloidal particles into materials with a uniqu
 e structure [1\,2\,3]. \nFinally I will demonstrate how these artificial l
 inkers can be coupled to compliant “particles”\, namely lipid vesicles
 \, to achieve a whole range of structural responses that cannot be induced
