DESCRIPTION:This paper re-examines the current standard interpretation of 
 relative productivity levels in British and American agriculture and manuf
 acturing\, using\, inter alia\, new data from the US Censuses of Manufactu
 res and Agriculture in 1850 and the Feinstein-Thomas input-output table fo
 r 1851\, as well as a new accounting framework that places emphasis on val
 ue-added rather than gross output as the appropriate basis for comparison.
