DESCRIPTION:The Hitomi X-ray Observatory was launched on February 17 and l
 ost on March 26th. In the meantime its Soft X-ray Spectrometer\, a microca
 lorimeter operating at 50 mK\, spent 3 days observing the Perseus cluster 
 and measuring the velocity broadening of the hot intracluster gas to a pre
 cision of 10 km/s. This is one to two orders of magnitude better than achi
 eved before and briefly opened the door on high resolution X-ray spectrosc
 opy of extended objects.
