DESCRIPTION:Block operator matrices are matrices the entries of which are 
 linear operators.\nThey arise frequently in applications\, e.g. when consi
 dering coupled systems of differential equations.\nIn this talk we shall i
 nvestigate the spectral theory of block operator matrices.\nQuestions to b
 e addressed include the location and structure of the spectrum and criteri
 a for block diagonalization\;\nthe latter is closely related to the existe
 nce of solutions of algebraic Riccati equations.\nApplications to problems
  from hydrodynamics\, magnetohydrodynamics\, and quantum mechanics will be
  presented.
