DESCRIPTION:Dr Martin Roth is currently one of the most influential museum
directors in the world. He has been Director of the Victoria and Albert M
useum since September 2011. As a German\, he is the first non-British dire
ctor of the V&A and\, for that matter\, of any national British museum.\n\
nDr Roth has had a distinguished career of involvement in museums\, galler
ies\, and arts research that has included a ten-year position as Director
General of the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen D
resden)\, among the oldest and most important collections in the world. Pr
ior to that\, he was President of the German Museums Association (1995-200
3)\, Curator at the Deutsche Historische Museum (1989-2001)\, and Director
of the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden (1991-2000)\, the first German sc
ience museum. A trustee of the British Council and the Musée des Arts Dé
coratifs in Paris\, Dr Roth is also a member of the Council of the Royal C
ollege of Art and the Court of Imperial College in London. In 2007\, he wa
s awarded the French ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres
’ which recognises significant contributions to the arts.\n\nThe V&A des
cribes itself as the ‘world’s greatest museum of art and design’\, w
ith a collection spanning 3\,000 years. It encompasses architecture\, cera
 mics\, glass\, fashion\, jewellery\, metalwork\, painting\, photography an
d more. The V&A owes its current worldwide success to the visionary concep
t that Dr Roth has created and implemented during his time at the museum:
a model that consists in a strong focus on research\, a striving for popul
arity and commercialisation\, and the construction of an international net
work.\n\nThe Cambridge University German Society proudly presents Dr Marti
n Roth as our first speaker of Easter Term. The topic of his talk will be:
‘Total Accessibility: Challenges and Opportunities for the 21st-Century
Museum’. There will also be time for questions.\n\nPlease note that the
event will be held in English.\n\nEveryone welcome! We look forward to se
 eing you there!\n\nFacebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2091113
